SUMMARY:Toby Walker
DESCRIPTION:Toby Walker \nReturning to Blues Bar Tring\, acoustic guitar supremo from the USA\, Toby Walker! \n \nInternationally and nationally acclaimed Toby Walker from the USA has been hailed as an award winning\, roots music fingerstyle guitar virtuoso and songwriter. Blending the styles of blues\, ragtime\, country\, bluegrass and old-time jazz\, Toby Walker has developed his own style and as such\, received numerous awards\, including being the 1st place recipient of the International Blues Challenge Award in Memphis and the New York Music Award for best instrumental CD. Toby Walker has also been inducted into the New York Blues Hall Of Fame. His show includes some amusing songs and great stories along with guitar playing that captivates audiences. \n“If he doesn’t get them with his phenomenal guitar playing or catchy songs\, he gets them with his wonderful stories. True entertainers have an engaging spirit that puts a smile on your face. Arlo Guthrie has it. David Bromberg has it. And so does Toby. ” John Platt – WFUV \n“Flat out… you have to hear this great musician… I’m blown away” Jorma Kaukonen of Hot Tuna and the Jefferson Airplane \n“A fingerpicking guitar virtuoso” Happy Traum \n“Not only can Toby play all styles of the blues\, but he’s a remarkable story-teller as well. And you’ll be surprised by what else he’ll pull out of his hat to please his audiences. He may come out with an arrangement of ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’ or ‘Ain’t Misbehavin’ followed by an Irish fiddle tune medley (on guitar)\, a couple of rousing singalongs and top it all off with his arrangement of the Allman Brothers tune ‘Little Martha\,’ Whipping Post’ or even a traditional bluegrass tune.” He takes the audience on one heck of a ride and leaves them smiling all the way home!!” John Sheridan – The Sunday Times. \nWebsite

SUMMARY:Geraint Watkins & The Mosquitoes
DESCRIPTION:Geraint Watkins & The Mosquitoes \n \nWith a brand new 10” vinyl album entitled “Here and There” hot off the presses in September 2024\, this is a welcome return to the venue for Geraint Watkins and the Mosquitoes – which these days is an exciting quartet including Oliver Darling (guitar/vocals)\, Paul Riley (bass)\, Malcolm Mills (drums). \nFor so many years a keystone of the bands of Nick Lowe\, Van Morrison\, Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings\, Dave Edmunds and countless more\, Watkins is also a revered creator of his own sublime music\, much of which has already been perfectly captured in a handful of solo albums. These days\, he performs this material with his band – The Mosquitoes. \nBob Dylan – proclaimed himself a Watkins fan by playing two solo cuts on his Theme Time Radio Hour saying (without a hint of irony) that “Geraint Watkins is my favourite English piano player.” \nWatkins was a member of noted British bands Juice on the Loose and Red Beans & Rice and following a move to London with the latter\, he soon found himself on the “Be Stiff Route 78” tour as part of Micky Jupp’s band. Shortly afterwards in 1979\, Andy Fairweather Low produced Watkins’ first album for the Vertigo label. Session work for producer Stuart Colman followed which led to him joining Shakin’ Stevens’ band before going on to record and play live with Dave Edmunds and many others including Eric Clapton\, Paul McCartney\, Mark Knopfler\, Dr. Feelgood\, Rory Gallagher\, The Blues Band\, The Fabulous Thunderbirds\, Stray Cats\, Carl Perkins\, John Wesley Harding\, Tom Jones\, Roger Daltrey and John Martyn. In addition to his touring and recording with Nick Lowe\, Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings and Van Morrison\, he somehow managed to keep The Balham Alligators stomping for fifteen years too. \nMosquitoes on Facebook\nGeraint on Facebook\nWebsite

SUMMARY:Martin Harley
DESCRIPTION:Martin Harley \n \nMartin Harley created a deep impression on the acoustic blues roots and Americana scene but these days he takes county blues riffs to the electric bottleneck slide guitar\, served up with sweet vocal harmonies over the driving rhythms.\nIf success can be measured by growing global demand to attend Martin’s dynamic live performances then perhaps his touring schedule is proof of that. \nMartin has been making music and touring the world for over two decades. His sound has never been more down to earth. Exploring roots\, blues and slide guitar in a style The Guardian referred to as ‘Spellbinding’.\nHe has released eight albums to date\, four recorded on home soil and four across the Atlantic in Texas and Nashville. \nWebsite

SUMMARY:Ma Bessie After Hours Show - Friday
DESCRIPTION:Ma Bessie After Hours Show \nThis gig is on a FRIDAY \nMa Bessie After Hours Show with Julia Titus\n \nWith a passion for the Empress of the Blues\, Julia Titus started to perform as Ma Bessie in 2015\, sharing the music of Bessie Smith and her contemporaries with a new generation. Mixing Julia’s rich\, warm vocal sound with a dynamic group of musicians that look as well as sound the part\, Ma Bessie combines classic blues and jazz tunes from the inter-war years with a selection of original songs and hand-picked covers from the last 50 years of popular music. \nDuring the prohibition era\, artists like Bessie Smith would often have their regular job performing shows but when the work is done\, they often attended a late night space where they could just let go. Building on her family-friendly Prohibition Party\, Ma Bessie decided to follow her idols and put together her very own ‘After Hours’ show. \nFeaturing lyrically bawdy songs such as Kitchen Man\, Take Me For A Buggy Ride\, Whip It To A Jelly and You Gotta Give Me Some\, Ma Bessie ‘After Hours’ is a more daring show that is definitely only suitable for over-18s. If you’ve seen Ma Bessie before\, this will be right up your street. \nIf this is your first taste\, you will get to see a more cheeky Ma Bessie\, and it will definitely leave you wanting more! \nFacebook

SUMMARY:Factory
DESCRIPTION:Factory \n \nFactory\nAndy Qunta – Keyboards\, Guitar\, Vocals\nTony Qunta – Guitar\, Electric Violin\, Vocals\nGeoff ‘Jaffa’ Peckham – Bass Guitar\nLaurie Cooksey – Drums \nThe Factory Story \nMay 1970 – Factory was formed in Hastings\, UK\, by drummer\, Laurie Cooksey\, bass player\,\nJaffa Peckham\, and the Qunta brothers – Andy\, lead vocals and acoustic 12-string guitar\, and\nTony\, lead guitar/vocals. From the first rehearsal\, it was clear this band\, soon to be named “Factory”\,\nwas going to be something special. They established a rehearsal schedule that continued through\nmost of the band’s existence – Monday and Wednesday evenings at the Qunta residence. 100 watt\namp stacks and full double bass drum kit in the dining room\, while Andy and Tony’s parents tried\nto hear the TV and each other in the next room! On Sunday mornings\, there would be backing vocal\nrehearsals at Laurie’s house. \nIn Jan ’71\, Factory went into RG Jones Studios in South London\, and recorded four songs. Two of\nthese\, the heavy rocker “Time Machine” (written by a 16-year-old Tony)\, and the folk-rock style\n“Castle on the Hill”\, were released as a limited edition single on Oak Records. In 2008\, one copy\nwas sold at auction for over 400 British pounds\, (over US$600). Time Machine continued to be\nFactory’s signature song\, and show closer. \nBy ’72\, Andy was playing organ as well as the 12-string\, which was now electric\, instead of acoustic.\nTony was playing electric violin on some songs\, and was starting to do more of the lead vocals.\nRoger Daltrey of The Who invited them to be the band to test his new home studio. Some of these\ndemos were found in 2015\, and have been very helpful\, as the band were trying to remember and\nrehearse those songs. Roger seemed to like the band\, as they were invited back several times. He\nwas quoted in the music press that he has had Factory in his studio\, and they are “very good”. \n1973 – Factory’s songs were by now even more adventurous\, partly due to the added range of\nsounds. Influences came from many of the great bands of the time – now called the Classic Rock\nera. Their gigs moved them further away\, and more often. They opened for bands like Manfred Mann’s\nEarth Band\, Fleetwood Mac\, 10cc\, Scorpions\, Status Quo etc. After opening for Suzi Quatro\, her\nlegendary producer\, Mickie Most collectively shook Factory’s hand\, and said he was very impressed\,\nand to contact him. Afraid of being turned into a “pop” band\, they didn’t follow up on it\, wisely or not. \nMarch ’74 – Andy and Tony’s parents succumbed to a plane crash\, but the rest of the band helped\nthem through it\, and they were back on stage a week later. The gigs got better. Factory delivered\n110% every time. At the back was Laurie\, arms flailing\, cymbals rocking\, his facial expressions running\nthe full gamut of emotions! In front of him\, Tony\, Andy and Jaffa\, and later\, Steve\, running around\nthe stage\, throwing shapes influenced by the likes of Hendrix\, Townshend and Daltrey! During\nthis year they played on foreign turf for the first time\, at the Zoom Club in Frankfurt\, Germany. \nSeptember ’74 – Jaffa decided to leave to pursue other things. His place was taken by another\nHastings musician friend\, Steve Kinch. Over the next 2 years\, Factory played more and more gigs\,\naveraging 3 or 4 per week. They toured Holland\, and undertook residences at the PN Club in\nMunich\, following in the footsteps of Supertramp and others. \nNow that Factory felt ready to make a record\, the music scene was changing. Punk and disco\narrived in full force\, making things very difficult for a non-punk/non-disco band like Factory.\nIronically\, Factory were among the first to be aware of the coming of Punk. While setting up for\na gig in London\, they were informed by a gentleman named Johnny Rotten\, that his band\,\nthe Sex Pistols\, were playing first\, and were using Factory’s gear. The writing was on the wall!\nDespite making demos of increasingly “commercial” songs to please management\, the record\ncompanies had become a tough nut for Factory to crack. \nBy late ’76\, Factory had played its last gig. Or so it was thought at the time\, although there was\na rumour that\, rather than having given up\, they were planning to try their luck in another era.\nIt was well-known they had their own Time Machine\, they’d been singing about it for years\, so\nwere they planning a return? As the decades passed\, this seemed less and less likely\, but suddenly\,\n39 years later\, they were back! They were finally recording an album\, and they played a reunion\ngig in Hastings\, attended by fans old and new. The reviews were glowing\, and many commented on\nthe fact that their musicianship and energy levels seemed undiminished. How was this possible?\nThe explanation is clear – Factory did indeed disappear in the 1970’s\, and in 2015 they came\nback…in the time machine! \n \nFacebook website

SUMMARY:Pearl Handled Revolver
DESCRIPTION:Pearl Handled Revolver \n \n“People often deride the blues as static but this psychedelic stew of rock and kaleidoscopic blues shows the medium can be progressive if bands sprinkle invention on it as well as this British outfit do” – Powerplay Magazine. \nThey are billed as a heavy blues outfit but they are so much more than that. The band are always going to be distinctive due to the throaty Joe Cocker like vocals of Lee Vernon who not only uses that attribute superbly but also commands the stage in a way that makes it difficult to avert your gaze from him as you always feel you are going miss something. ” “You are transported back to the late 60s Cream\, The Doors and The Spencer Davis Group…. those influences added to the Joe Cocker vocals and you have a band that are more than just watchable as borne out by the very appreciative crowd who roared out for more even after an hour set. \nWebsite

SUMMARY:The Franck Ash Band
DESCRIPTION:The Franck Ash Band\n \nFranck Ash – guitar\, vocals\nDerek White – bass\nChris Sharley – drums \nBlues guitarist Franck Ash\, was guitarist and band leader for Screamin’ Jay Hawkins\, recording two albums with him and playing in his band across the USA and Europe. Franck wows audiences with his vocal style\, impressive guitar lines and excellent rhythmic feel; playing traditional and funky/soul blues originals and interesting versions of classic blues songs.\nImmersed in Black American music from a very young age\, Franck Ash developed a passion for singing and playing guitar at the age of 12. His love of music and hunger for the Blues continued throughout his childhood and led him to become a professional musician in 1985. Franck’s debut album in 1999 ‘This Must Be Love’ was released to critical acclaim across the international Blues scene\, resulting in an award from the French Academy Of Jazz and an award as best European artist in 2000 by Euroblues. \nAlongside the work with his own band\, Franck was also invited to become band leader and guitar player for the great SCREAMIN’ JAY HAWKINS. They toured Europe and the USA\, including playing the 13th Chicago Blues Festival and recorded two albums together – ‘At Last’ in Sam Phillips Memphis studio with Muscle Shoals rhythm section (1997)\, and ‘Live At The Olympia’ in Paris (1998). This collaboration lasted up until Screamin’ Jay’s passing in February 2000.\nFranck’s debut album in 1999 ‘This Must Be Love’ was released to critical acclaim across the international Blues scene\, resulting in an award from the French Academy Of Jazz and an award as best European artist in 2000 by Euroblues.\nAs inimitably his own style\, Franck continued to develop a unique and versatile repertoire with a fusion of Soul\, R’nB and Funk on a solid Blues ground and released ‘Beyond The Clouds’ in 2003.\n2011 – ‘Caught in The Act – Live In London’ definitely shows that Franck loves being on stage and his live performances are full of energy and virtuosity. In this live recording he also truly enjoys bringing along new arrangements to great blues standards. \nFranck Ash has supported blues greats such as Luther Allison\, Dr. John\, Robert Cray\, Robben Ford \, Magic Slim and Taj Mahal and met Mr BB King several times. SUMMARY:Secondary Modern Jazz (Hospice of St Francis )
DESCRIPTION:Secondary Modern Jazz (Hospice of St Francis) \nThis is for people who like their jazz laid back and soulful. Expect an evening of jazz standards\, perhaps with a few surprises thrown in. \nSecondary Modern Jazz are a quartet\, and collective\, based around the wonderful voice of Rachael Brown\n \nRachael has sung in various bands and genres over the years. Working with SMJ brings her back to her roots where she started – singing jazz in high class London hotels. Rachael has that rare ability of being able to connect. Her beautiful vocals can’t fail to lift the spirits of her listeners. \nNeil Soutar has been playing guitar for over 35 years. Starting off as a fan of guitar based\, early ’70s rock music\, he soon found his way to jazz\, and became hooked on listening to players like Joe Pass\, Jim Hall\, Pat Metheny and Grant Green. Neil lives his music and there’s a real depth and authenticity to his skilful playing. \nColin Edwin is one of Australia’s finest exports. Probably best known for his fretless bass work with prog rock band Porcupine Tree\, he has played and recorded with many different artists in lots of different musical styles. At heart Colin is a jazz fan and there is a lovely feel and solidity to his upright bass playing. \nRay Ashley-Brown served as a musician in the RAF and in the Coldstream Guards. For years he has played in big bands and small groups. Music is one of the ways he relaxes and sustains his spirit – a welcome contrast to his job as the Head of Spiritual Care at the Hospice of St Francis. Ray’s playing is not about technical fireworks\, but melody\, groove and\, above all\, the wonderful sound the trombone can produce when treated with respect. \nThe quartet is often expanded to a quintet with the addition of drummer Bill Pamplin. Bill studied music at the London College of Music specialising in percussion and double bass and continues to play and teach at a professional level. He always adds to any ensemble he plays with\, interacting creatively and sensitively with other musicians. \nFacebook

SUMMARY:Malaya Blue
DESCRIPTION:Malaya Blue \n \nMalaya Blue backed by:\nSam Kelley drums\nTony Qunta guitar\nEddie Masters Bass \nAcknowledgement of Malaya Blue’s continued recognition in the worlds Blues community can be measured by the quality of musicians who travelled from far and wide to record her new album in a small back street recording studio in her home city of Norwich. Richard Cousins (Robert Cray\, John Lee Hooker\, Etta James)\, Brett Lucas (Bettye LaVette\, Thornetta Davis\, Jeremy Spencer)\, John McCullough (Sinead O’Connor\, Van Morrison) and Sam Kelly (Gary Moore\, Chaka Khan\, Robert Plant and more) were happy to be involved. The album builds on the song-writing partnership with multi Grammy winning writer and producer Dennis Walker (Robert Cray\, BB King\, Bettye LaVette) with contributions from Brett\, Joey Delgado (Delgado Bros) and Hank Linderman (Joni Mitchell\, Eagles and Chicago). 2020’s release Still firmly planted Malaya into the Roots Music Report charts\, sticking around for over a year and gaining no less than six Grammy considerations. When such iconic figures as Dennis and the godfather of UK blues Paul Jones not only publicly sing Malaya’s praises as a vocalist but are happy to collaborate with her\, it’s time to sit up and take notice.\nMalaya burst onto the live circuit in 2015 following the release of her critically acclaimed debut album Bourbon Street. Introducing her\nintoxicating stage presence to blues audiences at The Great Rock & Blues Festival that year\, a plethora of bookings followed including\niconic venues such as The Jazz Cafe\, The 100 Club\, New Crawdaddy Club and The Bulls Head\, Barnes and festivals Birmingham International and Colne. Along the way the British Blues Association nominated Malaya UK Blues Challenge Final. \nEarly 2016 found Malaya in the studio recording the follow up album with some of the cream of British blues musicians and guest appearances by legendary Paul Jones who has become a fan and staunch supporter.\nThe resultant album Heartsick received even higher praise than the debut and introduced the Malaya Blue phenomenon to a wider audience with continued radio play on BBC Radio 2\, all the UK based blues broadcasters and at respected stations across the USA\, Australia\, New Zealand\, Canada\, Japan\, South America and most of Europe. National and International print and online music media have been generous in their praise of the album with reviews\, interviews and articles appearing in Classic Rock\, R2R\, Maverick\, Blues Matters\, Blues In Britain\, Rock Society\, Red Lick\, Songwriting Magazine\, Music¬News in Britain: Blues Blast and Elmore magazine in the US plus Rock Your Brain\, Rootstime\, Blues Greece and Concert Monkey in Europe to name only a few. \nThat record also introduced her vocal prowess to Dennis Walker who was blown away with what he heard and started writing songs tailored to her voice and taking Malaya under his wing to pass on his song-writing techniques and skills. The first album to come from that collaboration was Still\, which also included input from Brett Lucas and Richard Cousins. It really gave Malaya recognition to the USA blues community\, spending over a year high in the respected Roots Music charts and gaining Grammy considerations in six categories. The longer Dennis and Malaya worked together the more he was able to craft songs around her voice and style leading to the super selection of songs on the new album Blue Credentials. \nIt means a lot to Malaya to be the only UK based artist Dennis ever worked with. New album Blue Credentials displays the blossoming of this connection\, completed and given his seal of approval shortly before his passing in the Spring of 2022. \n \nWebsite
